LABIAPLASTY - Orange County, CA

What is a Labiaplasty?

A Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that removes excess skin from the labia minora (the folds of skin lining the opening to the vagina). Occasionally, the labia majora can be reduced as well if it contains excess fat and/or skin.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Labiaplasty?

Patients who are good candidates for a Labiaplasty typically have excess skin of the labia minora and/or majora that bothers them.

They should not smoke in order to minimize the risk of wound healing problems after surgery.

How Do I Prepare for a Labiaplasty?

A labiaplasty is usually done under local anesthesia, so labs and medical clearance are generally not needed unless further workup is warranted due to medical history. If you are menstruating, it is usually best to hold off on surgery until the end of your cycle.

Any jewelry or metal in the lower body region should be removed for the actual procedure. You should also quit smoking 6 weeks prior to surgery until 6 weeks after surgery to minimize complications. (Better yet, quit for good!)

What is Involved in the Labiaplasty Procedure?

A labiaplasty is usually performed in a procedure room with numbing medication only. We will give you topical medication to numb your skin prior to injecting numbing medication into the area to keep you comfortable the entire time. Patients usually feel no pain except for a small poke at the beginning.

The excess labial skin is then removed, and the skin edges are contoured to make a more aesthetic result. Absorbable sutures are placed so that none need to be removed at your follow-up appointment.

What is the Recovery from a Labiaplasty?

Patients usually go home the same day after a Labiaplasty. You will be prescribed some ointment to help soothe the area and help it heal more quickly. Most patients will consider wearing pads in the area to protect the sutures and prevent the ointment from getting on their clothes.

Patients may complain of soreness for 1-2 weeks. Swelling and bruising may be present for 2-3 weeks. Full healing should occur by 6 weeks after surgery. Heavy duty lifting and sex should be avoided for 4 weeks.

What are the Risks of a Labiaplasty?

Risks from a Labiaplasty include bleeding and infection. Although the groin region is generally contaminated, infection is rare. Patients are given an antibiotic after surgery to help prevent infections. However, they will also have to work diligently to make sure the surgical area stays clean and unsoiled. Sensation changes in the area are uncommon, but they are typically temporary, resolving in several weeks if they occur.

What Can I Expect from a Labiaplasty?

The changes seen in your Labiaplasty are immediate! Swelling improves over several weeks, and sutures will fall out on their own by 4 weeks.

The scars are generally very minimal and are hidden within the labial tissue. Many patients love they way they look and feel afterwards and say they have more confidence when being intimate with their partners.
