Brazilian Butt Lift - Orange County, CA

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift (or BBL)?

A Brazilian Butt Lift is a surgery that involves liposuction of fat from various areas of the body followed by reinjection of that fat back into the buttocks to improve shape and contour. The amount of fat that can be transferred depends on the amount of fat available in other parts of the body. Various shapes and sizes can be obtained depending on your goals and anatomy.

Who is a Good Candidate for a BBL?

Patients looking to get a Brazilian Butt Lift should be healthy and have few medical problems. Some patients will have had a large amount of weight loss, making their butt deflate and sag because the stretched skin can no longer retract. Other patients will have a normal butt that has a depression on the sides and needs more fullness. They would simply like it to be rounder with better shape.

The more fat you have on your body, the easier it will be to get a great result with your Brazilian Butt Lift! That's because there is more fat to be transferred to the butt in order to improve the shape and make it "pop" out further. Does that mean you should try to gain weight in order to have more fat to transfer? No! While some surgeons will encourage that you gain weight for the surgery, Dr. Nguyen will never have you risk your health for the sake of a cosmetic result.

Gaining weight unnecessarily can increase the risk of high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and other health problems. Dr. Nguyen will take as much of the existing fat you have as possible to create a beautiful result, but he won't ask you to risk your health.

How Do I Prepare for a Brazilian Butt Lift?

You may be asked to get clearance from your doctor prior to getting a BBL. These labs may include a CBC (blood count to make sure your blood levels are high enough), BMP (to check electrolytes), coagulation factors (to make sure you don't have increased risk of bleeding), and possibly clearance from your primary care doctor.

You may also be asked to wash your body with an antibacterial solution called Hibiclens for several days prior to surgery. This will help kill the bacteria on your skin and prevent infections after the surgery. If you smoke, we will also ask you to stop smoking 4 weeks prior to surgery up until 4 weeks after surgery. This helps to prevent constriction of the blood vessels in your skin so that we can be more aggressive with the liposuction. More of the fat will also survive in your butt and give you a better result!

What is Involved in a BBL Surgery?

For your Brazilian Butt Lift, Dr. Nguyen will usually start with liposuction of your abdomen and flanks. A special solution will be injected into the fat to help minimize pain after surgery as well as to decrease the amount of bleeding. Small incisions less than 1 cm wide will be made in your skin to be able to suction out the fat. We may also take some from your lateral chest, arms, and thighs depending on where you have excess fat available.

Once we have removed enough fat from the front, we will flip you over and repeat the process on the back. Liposuction of all these areas has the added benefit of making your body thinner and tighter. You may also request to have Dr. Nguyen spend more time etching your body, creating a high definition six-pack and chest.

The fat is collected within a canister and processed to remove most of the oil and excess fluid, leaving only high quality fat behind. The fat is then reinjected into the areas of your butt that need it most. This will help increase the volume of your butt and contour its shape to become rounder. Most of your incisions will be left open to drain fluid for several days (make sure you buy plenty of absorbent pads!).

You will placed in a surgical compression garment at the end of surgery in order to help reduce swelling. Patients will typically be able to go home the same day after about an hour in the recovery room.

What is the Recovery After a BBL?

Patients will go home the same day as surgery. You will be required to sleep on your stomach for 6 weeks. You don't want to crush the fat that was injected into your hips or butt or it will not survive. You may also not sit for 2 weeks - standing or lying on your stomach is allowed.

You should walk around once you get home. Walking will help mobilize the fluid so that it drains out of your incisions more quickly. This will help the swelling come down faster. We recommend that you buy absorbent pads to place in your car for the ride home and on your couch and bed.

You will need to wear your garment for 6 weeks total. Most of the swelling will have resolved by about 6 weeks. Most patients complain of soreness for 1-2 weeks and bruising for 2 weeks. You may return to work at 2 weeks, but do not lift anything heavier than 5 pounds for 6 weeks. Heavy lifting may cause you to bleed or form fluid collections underneath your skin. Final results are not completely apparent until 3-6 months after surgery. While waiting for your final results, you must also continue your diet and exercise regimen or else you will regain fat.

What are the Risks of a Brazilian Butt Lift?

BBLs carry the same risks of bleeding and infection like any other surgery. You will be given antibiotics to take for 7 days to help prevent any sort of infection. The same risks of liposuction also apply to this surgery because a large portion of it requires liposuction of different areas. These include contour deformities, uneven skin, and fluid collections.

Only 50-60% of the injected fat survives within the buttocks, which can be a significant decrease from what it looks like immediately after surgery. Risks include uneven distribution of fat, contour irregularities, and disappointment with results.

What Can I Expect After Getting a Brazilian Butt Lift?

Your results will be immediate! Your butt will be noticeably larger and more contoured right after surgery. However, some of that is swelling of the tissue and will likely decrease over the next several months. You will also have some swelling of the liposuctioned areas that will take several weeks to months to settle down. You will have to wear a garment over these areas for 6 weeks in order to get the best results.
