What is Microneedling?
Microneedling is a type of skin resurfacing technique that enhances the skin's texture and reduces fine lines and wrinkles. "Skin resurfacing" refers to any technique that injures one or more layers of skin. This trauma causes the skin to respond by creating more elastin and collagen. Elastin and collagen decrease naturally as you age, causing the skin to become less firm and elastic. Microneedling, therefore, helps to reverse some of these changes and restore more youthful skin!
How Does Microneedling Work?
Microneedling resurfaces your skin by using very fine needles to create 14 micro-punctures in your skin 720 times each minute. Although this may sound painful, we pretreat your skin with a strong numbing agent so that the procedure is virtually pain free. Most patients describe it as a gentle massage of their face.
The trauma from the micro-punctures stimulates your skin to regenerate elastin and collagen, improving its texture and turgor. As the skin heals, you will notice over the next few weeks that your fine lines and wrinkles start to decrease. This may continue over several months as the skin rebuilds itself.
Who is a Candidate for Microneedling?
Microneedling is safe and effective for patients of all skin types (Fitzpatrick I - VI). Candidates include patients looking to improve signs of face and neck aging, including the development of fine lines and wrinkles. It can also be very effective in treating residual acne scars.
What Does The Microneedling Procedure Involve?
Our experienced RN, Lorissa, provides a wonderful spa experience during your microneedling session. You should plan to allot about 1.5 hours for the entire process, including consents (~10 minutes), time for numbing (~30 minutes), and the actual microneedling procedure (~30 to 45 minutes). We'll place a topical numbing cream on your face and neck skin so that the procedure is virtually painless!
Lorissa uses the Lift Gel on your skin to assist with gliding of the Skin Pen. The needles will painlessly create micropunctures in your face and neck, resulting in a nice even erythema, or skin glow. This may look like a sun burn without the actual DNA damage to your skin.
Is There Any Downtime After The Microneedling Procedure?
Microneedling has minimal downtime compared to most skin resurfacing procedures. You will notice your face turning red towards the end of the procedure. This is the end goal where we know the treatment has had good penetration and effect on your skin. The redness typically lasts only for 1 day during which you'll need to avoid sunlight. You'll also notice generalized swelling of your face for about 24 hours.
How Often Do I Have To Do Microneedling To See Results?
We usually recommend a series of three treatments initially, each one month apart, to jumpstart your skin rejuvenation. After that, we recommend maintenance 2-3 times each year to keep your skin looking fresh and revitalized.
If you are treating acne scars, you may require 2 treatments (for mild scars) to 6 treatments (more severe scars).
